🇮🇷⛽️ Iran Develops Know-How to Keep Plastic-to-Fuel Plant Running Continuously

Iranian engineers say they have developed the know-how to run a plastic-waste-to-fuel plant continuously by overcoming technical gaps in imported equipment, giving Iran greater control over the process at Isfahan’s recycling plant, according to the company’s CEO.

By heating plastic without oxygen, a process called pyrolysis breaks the material down into gas, oil and solid residue, but keeping production running requires engineers to move waste through a hot reactor without repeatedly shutting it down.

Where operators previously had to cool the reactor, remove carbon residue and reheat it, the company says its continuous operating method uses two screw conveyors to feed material in and carry residue out. New feedstock can enter while the reactor runs at around 500°C, avoiding the need to cool it between loads.

Those avoided cooling and reheating cycles mean less wasted heat and fewer interruptions, both important for making low-value waste worth processing. The report does not provide measured energy savings or operating costs.

With essential operating information missing from the imported equipment, Iranian specialists had to develop plant layouts, piping, electrical controls and production settings themselves, CEO Saeed Zareh Deh-Abadi says. He attributes those gaps to the Chinese supplier’s failure to provide the necessary documentation.

When early trials produced wax that clogged the lines, the team traced the problem to excessively wet incoming waste and arranged for the municipality to supply dry material instead, resolving the blockage problem, according to the CEO. Getting the input right proved as important as adapting the machinery.

Support from the Barakat Knowledge-Based Institute also helped the project source burners, controls, electrical equipment and conveyors domestically, putting more of the components and expertise needed to operate the imported machinery in Iranian hands.

With that experience, the company sees scope to replicate the process in other cities, although expansion still requires proof of sustained output and viable costs. Developing the engineering knowledge locally and sourcing selected components at home gives Iranian operators a stronger basis for running these plants with less dependence on foreign suppliers.
