🇮🇷⛏ Iran Pushes Into Deeper Iron Ore Mining With Homegrown Technology
Iran is preparing to extract iron ore from deposits more than 300 meters underground, putting its growing domestic mining-engineering capabilities to work on more demanding resources.
Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Company, a major Iranian iron ore producer, plans to develop two deposits known as T1 and T2.
The company is pursuing contracts for the project, with operations targeted for the second half of the Iranian calendar year ending in March 2027.
Moving underground brings a different set of engineering demands.
Unlike open-pit mining, underground extraction requires specialized excavation machinery, reinforced passages, ventilation systems and equipment to transport ore through confined spaces.
Iranian manufacturers have already developed machinery for some of these tasks.
In 2023, Tehran-based Shayan Fanavaran Amitis developed a domestic roadheader, a machine capable of mechanized excavation and material handling. Its equipment has reportedly been used at several projects, including the Angouran lead-and-zinc mine and Sarcheshmeh copper mine.
Another example comes from Sangan-Khorasan Steel Mining Industries.
By the end of 2024, the company reported localizing 90 types of industrial equipment and 2,275 components, generating cumulative foreign-currency savings of approximately €14M.
Its engineers also developed a seven-axis liner handler used to maintain large grinding mills, replacing equipment previously imported at a cost of roughly €2.5M.
These projects have helped expand Iran's domestic capacity to design, manufacture and maintain specialized mining equipment.
The economic stakes are substantial.
Iran produced approximately 32M tonnes of crude steel in 2025, making it the world's tenth-largest steel producer, according to the World Steel Association.
That industry depends on reliable supplies of iron ore, concentrates and pellets. Developing deeper deposits could help sustain the flow of raw materials as existing mining operations mature.
Sanctions have complicated access to foreign machinery, industrial technology and international financing. Iranian engineering companies have consequently gained a larger role in supplying equipment that mining operators previously sourced abroad.
Chadormalu's underground project is still being developed, and the equipment selected for its operations has not been publicly detailed.
Its planned expansion comes as Iranian manufacturers are building up experience with excavation systems, mining machinery and ore-processing equipment, giving the country's steel industry a broader domestic engineering base to draw .🇮🇷⛏ Iran Pushes Into Deeper Iron Ore Mining With Homegrown Technology Iran is preparing to extract iron ore from deposits more than 300 meters underground, putting its growing domestic mining-engineering capabilities to work on more demanding resources. ❗️North Korea says it has successfully test-fired an AI-powered intermediate-range strategic missile capable of altering its flight path at low altitude and operating across multiple trajectory modes.
Kim Jong Un personally supervised the launch. Kim Yo Jong claimed that South Korean and Japanese forces were unable to fully track the missile, warning that “there is no way to avoid this attack.”❗️North Korea says it has successfully test-fired an AI-powered intermediate-range strategic missile capable of altering its flight path at low altitude and operating across multiple trajectory modes. Tanzanian Innovator Develops AI Smart Glasses to Help Blind Users 'See' Through Audio
🇹🇿👓 Baraka Nicodemus Martin was inspired to create the glasses after attending a secondary school where blind students, facing a shortage of Braille textbooks, depended on friends to read to them, he told Sputnik Africa.
Key highlights:
🟠How It Works: The glasses convert visual information into audio. They take a picture of text or objects, analyze it with AI, and describe what they see to the user, reducing their dependence on others.
🟠User-Centered Design: Martin developed the product together with the visually impaired community from the very beginning. The first prototype was too heavy, but the second is lighter and wearable.
🟠Testing: The glasses have been tested with the Tanzania League of the Blind and the Zanzibar Association of the Blind. Users particularly appreciate using them to analyze surroundings and read documents independently.
