  • Why Accurate CAD Models Still Cause Manufacturing Rework


    A CAD model can be geometrically correct and still create problems on the manufacturing floor.


    The issue is often not the model itself, but the information surrounding it — outdated drawings, inconsistent revisions, incomplete BOMs, missing manufacturing requirements, or design changes that were never reflected across downstream documentation.


    This becomes especially difficult in products with large assemblies or long engineering histories. A small design change can affect drawings, part numbers, BOM structures, tooling, procurement, and manufacturing instructions.


    A stronger CAD workflow looks beyond geometry. Engineering teams need to maintain consistency between the model, drawings, product structure, revisions, and manufacturing requirements before a design is released.


    Legacy CAD data creates another layer of risk. Before migrating older designs into a new CAD or PLM environment, teams should validate geometry, metadata, naming standards, BOM relationships, and revision history rather than treating migration as simple file conversion.


    CAD automation can also reduce repetitive modeling and drafting work, particularly when engineering teams repeatedly create similar configurations.
