Is .408 or .375 CheyTac a Better Chambering for Your ELR Rifle?

Both .408 and .375 CheyTac, developed by Cheyenne Tactical for the M200 Intervention Sniper rifle, and loaded with Balanced Flight Projectiles that are ballistically engineered to remain supersonic all the way to a target, are excellent ELR rifle cartridges. 

But they’re not the same, similar as they are; so, which is best for your ELR rifle? Let’s take a somewhat closer look.

.375 CheyTac 

The .375 CheyTac is the lighter cousin of the .408 CheyTac, and it offers slightly different ballistic performance. 

Loaded with a bullet that weighs between 350 and 375 grains, the .375 CheyTac: 

• Produces muzzle velocities between 3000 and 3200 FPS.
• Generates 6800 to 7500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. 
• Has a ballistic coefficient of around .988 depending on the bullet.
• And has an effective range in excess of 2500 yards.

.408 CheyTac

By contrast, the .408 CheyTac is the larger, heavier predecessor to the .375 CT. The .408 CheyTac is loaded with a heavier bullet that weighs between 419 to 420 grains, and: 

• Produces muzzle velocities that are slightly lower, between 2850 to 3000 FPS.
• Generates higher muzzle energies between 7700 to 8000 ft-lbs. 
• Has a slightly lower ballistic coefficient of about .949 depending on the bullet.
• And has an effective range in excess of 2500 yards.

So, while ballistic performance is not the same, it is the case that both of these cartridges have a very similar effective range. That being the case, which is for you?

So, Which Is Best for You?

Considering the fact that these cartridges produce such similar performance and have basically the same effective range, we need to look at some of the nuances here to determine which is the more effective chambering for your applications. 

First, the .408 CT produces higher muzzle energy and carries more energy to the target, despite the fact that muzzle velocity is a little bit lower. For anti-materiel applications, it is the better choice. If you will be hunting at extreme ranges, it is also possibly a better round. 

The .375 CheyTac’s main advantage is that it shoots flatter than the .408 CheyTac, and it has a slightly higher BC. Because of that, if all you’ll be doing is competing and you literally just need your bullet to shoot as flatly and accurately as possible, it’s hard to beat .375 CheyTac.

That being said, either one can be a highly effective ELR rifle shooting cartridge, especially in the hands of an experienced extreme long-range shooter.
